Simon Bowhill plays drums with Gaffa and is the kit drummer and okónkolero in The Axis Percussion Trio.
Simon has been a drummer since he was 12 years old. He studied under Steve Robinson and Johnathon Bose during the early years growing up in Leigh on Sea. His first playing experience was in a local brass band from where he graduated to playing in the SEEVIC big band which culminated in a tour of Basel Switzerland. He has been putting flams on triplets ever since.
It was during a visit to L.A. in 1996 that Simon picked up a copy of a book on Afro-Cuban rhythms by Chuck Silverman along with a pair of Generation 2 LP Bongos. This was the beginning of a journey that would take him all over the world... well at least to Cuba anyway and it was the beginning of what would later become The Axis.
Simon was the long time drummer in The Reservations who toured with Dave Blayze through out the early part of the new century. He also had a long and varied career as a Jazz drummer playing with various names of note on the East Midlands Jazz scene.
Simon is also an enthusiastic, highly competent and experienced teacher working all over the East Midlands with pupils raning in ability from beginner to post grade 8. He recently received a distinction in his ATCL exam.
